Eine Kleine Burroughs To Spice Up Your Day/Night

Hello Yes Hello.

Too long. My apologies. Too busy, for sure. And so Life, it goes on...

Herein you will find many links regarding William S. Burroughs, some with sound, some with vid, all with some manner of writing from or about Uncle Bill.
Of particular interest:
2 of the pics contain links, one of which is an excellent bbc programme narrated by Laurie Anderson regarding William and his influence upon others. Further infos follow.
The other link is for an excerpt from Real English Tea Made Here. Puertos De Los Santos, to be exact.
Also, follow the Giorno links to UbuWeb archive mp3s. Brilliant.

At any rate, I hope this finds you well and in as good a health as you can muster.

Hello? Yes! hello.

Printed Matter Synopsis
"Real English Tea Made Here is an anthology of the cut-up tapes of William S. Burroughs. Containing rare and unpublished material, of over three hours duration, the collection provides a valuable insight into Burroughs' methodology and constitutes an important document of his expansion from cut-ups on paper to vocal permutations and sonic experimentation.
The tapes curated as Real English Tea Made Here were originally created in Tangier and New York in the early 1960s using reel-to-reel analogue tape, sound-on-sound technology. "
"An invisible hand presses the record button on the radio, then stops: advertisements vying with weather reports for the New York area are intercut with news stories about death in its various forms – murder, plane crashes, foreign wars. Then the low, slow voice intones: ‘Sometimes happens just an old showman smell of sickness in the room Switzerland Panama City machine guns in Baghdad pieces of finance on the afternoon wind.’
Recorded in 1965, the 33-minute ‘Puertos De Los Santos’ is one of the rare and previously unreleased William S. Burroughs cut-up tapes collected on the triple-CD album Real English Tea Made Here. "
"Nothing Is True, Everything Is Permitted
Laurie Anderson profiles one of the most extraordinary writers and thinkers of the 20th century. William Burroughs was a leading figure of the Beat generation, hugely influential among musicians and artists from the 1970s to the present day and responsible for the dark side of American culture entering mainstream consciousness.
The programme features recordings of Burroughs's spoken word performances over a soundscape of noise and music from artists whom he inspired."

Coil Live Wave-Gotik-Treffen 31 May 2004

Note: all images from Kleiner Tod
used without permission, but full credit for some of the finer photo documentation found so far of Coil shows able to be posted here.

Now then, it is with GREAT pleasure that I am able to offer here this set from 31 May 2004 at Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Germany.

Coil Live at Wiki has this to say about the 2004 incarnation of Coil:
"In 2004 Coil embarked on their final tour titled "Even An Evil Fatigue"."

I was made aware of this set as torrent in an Anonymous comment left on my post requesting help filling out the Live incarnations of Coil. Well bless my soul if this isn't one hell of an amazing set. Per the original torrent poster's request, I have not converted these to a lossy format, but apple lossless. Sounds TASTY in the ipod, my friends.

"January 19th, 2004
Coil will be performing at the Wave Gotik Treffen festival which takes place in Leipzig, Germany on May 28th to 31st, 2004. Other bands confirmed to appear include Clan of Xymox, Covenant and Suicide Commando, with many more to be announced."

Personnel:

Tracklisting:
01 - The Gimp (Sometimes)
02 - Sex With Sun Ra
03 - Broccoli
04 - All The Pretty Little Horses
05 - (I Can't Get A Word In) Edgeways
06 - Tattooed Man
07 - Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)
08 - Wraiths And Strays
09 - Black Antlers (Where's Your Child?)
Compare this to the Paris set(2004-05-23). I am right now. Very different energies between the shows. I'd love to hear the continuity of this tour if someone knows of the Milkweg show's existence(2004-06-03). For now, though, do your own comparison. I like the acoustic qualities of the room as translated in this recording. Very full. Broccoli. mmm mmm good. Some audience chatter, but not too bad. "At least they have a shower":) Recording ends after last song. I don't know if there was some manner of John saying thank you or such, but I should imagine he did.
Apple Lossless. Broken into 6 parts. All parts required.

Coil Songs Of The Week (SOTW en toto - an addendum/a correction/a completion)

"What were the Songs of the Week? How can I get them?
Song of the Week was a series of MP3 songs given away free from the website. Unfortunately some people decided to abuse that free privilige by redistributing them. That led to people obtaining the songs w/o the disclaimers posted on the site which clearly stated the feature would be removed if people tried to sell the songs on CD-Rs instead of give them away. People are still trying to sell the CD-Rs, so if you see them, denand the songs for free, since they got the songs for free. "

26. "Acid Jam (Part 2)"

So then. In their released order and in its entirety, here are the Songs Of The Week. Journey here is culled from the Brainwaves Comp, as is SCIII, tho that shouldn't inhibit the integrity.

Sorry for any past confusions. I'll leave the other post up for awhile. That Journey is the one originally released with SOTW, but really there's not much difference.

If there is no notation beside the tracks, they are exclusive to the SOTW series.

Hope all is well. Thanks to F for filling me in and keeping me straight.

For Archival purposes only and to be shared only. These still bear the markings of Jhon.

Astral Disaster on Acme/Prescription (a "repost" of sorts)

Alright, then, a proper treatment to the musicks posted nigh on one year ago, unfortunately under improper labelling and infos. My apologies to anyone offended, my appreciation to all involved, so, without further ado, here then are the infos on Astral Disaster, the Acme/Prescription edition being the one posted here.

Tracks:
The Sea Priestess
Second Son Syndrome
I Don't Want To Be The One
The Avatars
The Mothership And The Fatherland

Personnel
Computer [Macintosh], Cymbal [Finger Cymbals] - Peter Christopherson
Lyrics By, Vocals, Other [Obsidian Mirrors, Scrim Generators] - John Balance
Mellotron, Organ [Hammond], Synthesizer - Thighpaulsandra
Synthesizer [Moog], Other [Thoughtforms] - Drew McDowall
Sitar and Guitar/The Sea Priestess, Guitar I Don't Want To Be The One - Gary Ramon

From Brainwashed:
"Part of a series of 8 releases (each by a different artist) on the Prescription imprint of Acme, a label run by Gary Ramon of the band Sundial. Like all other Prescription releases, this album was limited to 99 copies available only via subscription to the entire series. It's packaged in a plain black sleeve with a title sticker signed and numbered by Balance and Christopherson. It includes an insert with the track listing and release notes, and a piece of handmade artwork in a plastic zip-lock bag."

excerpt from interview with Ramon:
"What was the purpose of the Prescription label limited editions of 99 copies vinyl?
Gary Ramon: Prescription was a good idea, but it eventually became too much after the 2nd series. The idea was to copy the idea of the private pressings phenomenon from the 60s/70s. But to make it different, we got all the artists involved to design the sleeves themselves. I had a studio in London at the time, which was there to help me write and come up with a new Sun Dial album... So we just invited bands down to make albums. In some ways it was a crazy idea and never to be repeated... We had a lot of people asking us to make a 3rd series, but in the end, I found it took too much time. It was a great artistic thing to do but financially a bad move! I'm vaguely thinking of making a 3rd series at some stage, but it would be made in a totally different way -it would have to!"

AD at Discogs

AD at Wiki

From Brainwashed(regarding TH release):
"The songs "The Sea Priestess," "I Don't Want to be the One," and "2nd. Sun Syndrome" have been remixed or extended."MU-UR" is a remix of "The Mothership and the Fatherland.""

from wiki notes(taken from TH release):
"The album is mainly themed on mankind's pollution of the seas for commerce, as exemplified by the lyrics to "MÜ-ÜR". The majority of the album was recorded in an area below the level of the Thames River. "
""Second Son Syndrome" was purposely renamed "2nd Sun Syndrome" on reissue."
The following notes culled from Brainwashed. From John Balance as included in the ThresholdHouse vinyl release of Astral Disaster.

"The Avatars"
The Avatars is a title of a book by one of my favourite mystical poet /writers George Russell who was Irish. He wrote under the name A.E. which was short for AEON. He has writen some of the most inspiring and inspired prose about direct enchantment and trancendental communion with Nature. I mention him in the COIL song Bee-stings (?) when I sing "Don't believe A.E. See for yourselves the summer fields" - A plea for experiential outings, pilgrimages etc. Get out there - Travel! It's in both the journey and the destination...
Jimmy Page once declared he believed Kenneth Anger was an Avatar. A semi-God-form , a pure particular Spirit incarnated on this earth. A view he later renounced when they fell out. I think he was right myself.
The strange sound is a Syrinx sythesiser. A very scarce beast indeed... The track was my attempt to recall vivid childhood memories of when I used to try and sneak downstairs and watch the 'Quatermass' programmes on TV through a gap in the door.
"The Mothership and The Fatherland"
An attempt to explore the cosmic connection between 'flying saucers' and Krautrockery, UFOs and LFOs. Astral Acidity - LSD being a catalyst one supposes. The resultant progeny of the marriage of the two elements results in the birth of the "little lost children" who Kate Bush is singing about for us. The end has John speaking in tongues - Insect jabber.
The whole album really was recorded originally in two days over Samhain (Halloween) in a studio located below the level of the river Thames in ancient Southwark. An area the artist Austin Osman Spare frequented and knew particularly well. The theme of water, the sea, lunar influences again figure deeply in the whole of the album. We redid some of the material at our new studio that has a view of the sea.
Tidal.
Vital.
Lunar.
Tuna.
Tuner.
The inner sleeve photo portraits were taken by Peter Christopherson and John Balance of each other during the total eclipse of the sun. "See the Black Sun Rise...".
"2nd Sun Syndrome"
Loops of anguish caused by the feeling of being a second son in a family lineage. Changed from "son" on the original vinyl release. Now turned and tuned into intergalactic transmissions. Sex with Sun Ra. We have our voice-mail system linked up to SETI main computor - It searches for intelligent life in space while we sleep, in dead time.
"The Sea Priestess"
We thank Frater Purdurabo on the sleeve of the record. This is a magickal name Aleister Crowley used. It means "I will endure". A lot of the lyrics are based on Aleister crowleys own written descriptions of the so called 'obscene' murals on the walls of The Abbey Of Thelema at Cefalu in Sicily. The place still exists. Peter and I made a pilgrimage there last year and while we there discovered a lost painting on an internal door, the door to his own bedroom, the fabled "Chambre de Couchmares". It was a very roughly done Chinese style astral landscapewith waterfalls and pagodas. All what remains of the original murals rediscovered and painstakingly restoredand by Kenneth Anger in the 50's are crumbling and devastatingly beyond restoration now. I spent the day there photographing what remains, bitterly crying at the terrible loss of such a direct and beautiful magickal temple. The rest of the lyrics were written as a result of experiments with a small obsidian scrying mirror. The sub-concious surfacing. Brion Gysin would scry for hours to gain entrance into the place "where light writes in space". Whatever pollutants and poisons Manunkind pours into the seas, they too will endure.
"I don't want to be the one"
I feel like this at times. Reticent and resentful and then, in turn, scared and angry. Overpowered by what visions I have to endure. I've had visions ever since I was a child. They used to overwhelm me so much I used to fight against them. I had no context for them. Now I use them and accept them. Or try to.
"MÜÜR"
Gold, frankincense and MUUR. Balm of the sea. A joinery of MU and UR. MU being a mythical ancient landmass now lying submerged somewhere underneath the Pacific ocean. An Eastern version of Atlantis. UR meaning 'proto' and before now. At the formation of. On saying the word MUUR out loud I believe I am saying one of the first words ever forced out of the throat of man. A Proto-Mantra. The voice is my voice transformed into that of the Sea Priestess.
"It's the sail of the century". I am talking about the shortsighted rape and plunder and poison of the sea for commerce.
"God saved me from drowning, then kicked me to death on the beach".
"The miraculous image of sound washed ashore"
"what's His is History. What's missed is Mystery"

Please note, too, that the TH CD edition is currently up over at Nova-Express so if you haven't already, you can hear the difference.
I do know that Sleazy has the masters for these, so hopefully they will see some manner of release eventually. When that happens, this will be pulled, but until then...

Prescription, Amsterdam, Shirt (chagrin:(

Well, I had a request and usually I am unable to fufill such things, but I am able to offer due to the sublime kindness of a most gracious fellow lover of Coil (and double thanks, as you'll see) the Prescription edition of Astral Disaster. Further back in these here postings is the Thresholdhouse edition. ...or so I thought.
I now know for 100% that the edition posted previously at wassonii (as Sleepless from Latvia tried to tell me in the comments) is indeed the Acme/Prescription edition. I'll post the recent acquisition for a little bit here (192)and will update the erroneous post. As always, I mean well, I lay claim to being a fan, but not necessarily to being the most knowledgable fan. Och well, at least there's a lesson learned. Ummm, I guess I'll be needing to hear the TH edition, then, as that's what I thought I was hearing:) Anyway, good infos follow.
This will likely come back into print at some point, so when that happens, I will pull it.
Please read the disclaimer. Grazie.
Oh yes. SOISONG info follows....

The following infos from the Sugar Factory site (follow link in above pic):
"VAL DENHAM feat. OLI NOVADNIEKS ./ dj ./SOISONG ./ live ./
The evening will start of with a new edition of the illustrious Darkness is Enlightning, presenting cutting edge avant garde acts to the Sugar Factory. With earlier editions inviting Psycic TV and Throbbing Gristle, we are very proud to bring Soisong and Val Denham to this edition.SoiSong is a new project by Peter Christopherson ( Coil;Throbbing Gristle) and IvanPavlov ( COH)The two-man show will combine Ivan's uncompromisingly-visceral computer based music with Christophersons decadent, dark and whimsical approach to artificial vocals and „South Seas2 instrumentation...The power and energy of Youth and the Russian Scientific Establishment with the filth, decay and corruption of English Maturity. SoiSong has been brewing for months in the gloomy Soi's, or alley-ways, of Bangkok, the world's most uninhibited Capitol city, where unlocked i-phones, hi-speed broadband, young brown flesh, and indeed Life itself, all come cheap.Val Denham is visual artist from Yorkshire, England. He has done work for (to name a few) Marc Almond, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, The Sword Volcano Complex, and Cyclobe. Always refreshing and unconventional, be prepared for a performance that you will remember."

There is a catch, however: Each DVD is limited to a single copy which can be borrowed free of charge from the Spoiler library. Spoiler and their library can be found at Museumsplatz 1 in Vienna.

The following is all I could find from the Fylkingen show:

Anarcocks have pics from some of the sets in 2002.
Any help obtaining audio files of these for either personal or posting purposes will be greatly appreciated!

Coil Live at Wiki
Coil Live at Wassonii
Coil Live at Because God Told Me To Do It

Among the official releases, those posted here and those posted at Because God Told Me To Do It, I believe the above to be the missing pieces. Holler, though, if I am incorrect. (Which I sometimes am:)

The Lepore Extrusion cd extras

excerpt from "Is Evolution Evil?:
Surgical Transformations as the New Punk Aesthetic in the 21st Century"

by Daniel McKernan:
"Our human form is becoming modified to the point of no return.
The traditional definition of form according to Webster’s Dictionary is
“the nature, structure, or essence of a thing, considered apart from its content,
color, texture, or composition.” On the other hand, Henri Bergson believed
more in the idea of formlessness: “What is real is the continual change of form:
form is only a snapshot view of a transition.” (Bergson, 302) Butler believes
that the objects of one’s desire force one to push against the boundaries
of binary sexuality."

Coil Live "Mind Your Head" Festival: Night 2, Royal Festival Hall, London, 1 October 2002

...from Coil News at Brainwashed 2002 (Aug. 12 entry):
"Coil have been announced as being the support act at the London date on the upcoming tour by Icelandic group Sigur Rós. It will be taking place on Tuesday, October 1st at Royal Festival Hall."
...from compulsion online 2002:
"Coil have been announced as special guests to Sigur Ros at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on October 1st. On October 12th Coil will be taking part in the Megalithomania festival organized by Third Stone and Strange Attractor."

I am currently unable to find out much else regarding this show. If anyone has or knows of pics to share, I would greatly appreciate it.
192 One Track

Thanks again to SA for this. Brilliant set. Quiet-like. Bang Bang. beautiful.
...from the Megalithomania! review at Brainwashed :
"A few days after this performance(wassonii note: referring to the set on 12 October), Peter and John announced that while Coil would continue, they would no longer describe themselves as a couple."
This set is definitely of a similar emotional current as that described in the aforementioned review. Poignant at the very least. "I Don't Want To Be The One" hurts.

1. Sine Waves
2. Last Rites Of Spring
3. A Warning From The Sun
4. Ostia (The Death Of Pasolini)
5. I Don't Want To Be The One
6. Bang Bang
7. Are You Shivering?

Thanks and appreciation to Sleazy for allowing me to put these out for now.
When Colour Sound Oblivion hits, should this piece be on it, it will be removed from this location.
Until then...

Coil Live Alte Spinnerei, Glauchau 13 April 2002

This set has me going out on a limb to say that thus far, of the 2002 sets, this is the clearest recording, the finest channeling by Balance as well as his rapport with the audience and the sounds being generated/created within and around by all members of Coil. Moving on many levels.
Let me know what you think. (Not bad for an audience recording.-)
Caveat: First track doesn't kick in until after :52

Now then, before you get all excited, I loaded this through Rapidshare, so there are many files involved. That's how it is.
This is the show that can be found at Youtube in parts

although I think this a better quality, I am not objective. Definitely for the completist whom does not currently have it.
As with the audio files, when Colour Sound Oblivion is officially announced, should this set be a part, it will be removed.

These pics are from the massimo and pierce anarcocks site and are used without permission, but there are several more of this set at their site, and more from others in this incarnation of Coil Live.

Coil Live Paradiso, Amsterdam-NL (01 June 2001)

This set is part of the Dutch Radio 4 Supplements (disc 4, to be exact), but this entry has the tracks separated, so I don't feel too badly posting this show for the sake of completeness.
I can't find from whence I culled the pic. Will make proper note once I locate it.
Thank you to F for access and Sleazy for permission. Please know that this will be removed if part of Colour Sound Oblivion. Until then, have enjoy.)

A great, cohesive set. Beautiful all the way around. As with my previous post of an audience recording of this set , I urge you to give a listen to both to know what the difference will be between the other archival recordings here on this blog and what will be part of the Colour Sound Oblivion set. A must if you haven't yet heard it.
A surprisingly good review from Billboard(James Mason)

Nurse With Wound

Some viddy Some more viddy of this show

You know, I meant to take a better listen to this set to be more accurate on it's tracklisting. Unfortunately I didn't and the kind soul who gave me the opportunity to even hear this fantastic set either didn't note it or I misplaced the information (morelike the latter). My apologies. I've kind of guessed at a couple, but let me know what you think/know. Regardless, excellent quality, for sure. Audience. Other infos contained within. Please read the disclaimer below and within and please heed. Otherwise, enjoy. I have.

If this has been posted elsewhere, I don't mean to duplicate, so please advise. I hadn't seen it when searching. Anyway, carry on:)

Between 256-320

1.Nurse With Wound - Intro
2.Nurse With Wound feat. David Tibet (I think "Dead Side Of The Moon", but that's only because of the lyric
3.Nurse With Wound
4.Nurse With Wound
5. Nurse With Wound
6. Nurse With Wound feat. David Tibet (Two Shaves And A Shine, I think)
7. Nurse With Wound feat. David Tibet
8. Nurse With Wound - Intermission
9. Nurse With Wound feat. David Tibet - Maldoror Is Ded

p.s. Huffin' Rag Blues on track for this coming June:)

Have you heard The New Backwards?

*****18 Aprille Note:
As announced earlier in the week (and in the comments below) The New Backwards is now available for DL from Threshold House
****2 Aprille Note:
I have knocked this down to one track, due to my conscience.
The album, though "The New Backwards" is streamable as tracks at my Mog page.
I would hope you understand.
and now back to the original post.****
Do you remember how the vinyls were sidereal and the cds straight forward? I can't speak to that for this, as I have no turntable currently, nor have I yet heard the Ape tracks in this set, nor has The New Backwards yet been released on cd. What I have heard and what has been pretty much the only music to which I have listened since this past Wednesday is The New Backwards from within The Ape Of Naples Box thanks to a kind friend with turntable and the means to transfer.
Absolutely brilliant. Please take a moment to scope out Jonathon Dean's review at Brainwashed (link provided below). I've included his comments from the list without permission, but they are so spot on, I had to share the knowledge.
What I cannot share is the entire album, as the cd with extra tracks is imminent and I have too much respect for Sleazy and the memory of John to do so.

Album now available for Download at ThresholdHouse
It is a wav file. I do not have permission for this. The link will be dead when a date of release is announced. Please support the bands you love and purchase their musicks.
(from a recent thread on the coil list. author j. dean who's review of The New Backwards can be found at Brainwashed)> "While researching my review of The New Backwards, I found out some information about the exact timeline of the famous "Backwards demos" that might be common knowledge to some veteran Coil fans, but was new to me.For a long time, I had labored under the assumption that the so-called "Backwards" demos were recorded in New Orleans, at Trent Reznor's studio, and represented work done by Coil intended for an album called "Backwards" to be released on Nothing Records. This was my impression, and while I can't point to any one source for this, I thought this was the accepted version of things. Turns out that this is very wrong. The demo tape containing Elves, Egyptian Basses, Simenon, Crumb Time, etc. etc. is actually from the very early 1990s, from sessions recorded not long after LSD, in the UK. These demos were recorded for Torso Records and were leaked very soon after, and the bootlegs have been making the rounds ever since. As everyone knows, these demo recordings were instrumental, and though they are often great, are more like rough sketches than finished compositions. After doing these demos, Coil got sidetracked with other projects like Black Light District and other things that seemed to them more interesting to pursue at the time. The demos sat dormant, for the most part, until...Some vocals and extra bits were recorded 5-6 years later, in the mid-1990s when the Coil/NIN connection happened. "Cold Cell" and "AYOR" and (I think...) a version of "Fire of the Mind" (maybe also "The Test," "Sex With Sun Ra" and a few other tracks) were recorded around this time, but shelved indefinitely, except for a few things that got out via Songs of the Week or comp contributions. The album names Backwards/International Dark Skies/God Please Fuck My Mind For Good/The World Ended A Long Time Ago were all announced or rumored at one point or another, but it was basically the creative second-guessing of fans that conflated these names with the Torso demos and (to some extent) the Nothing Records album, as if they were all the same thing, a sort of Freudian dream condensation of all the things Coil hadn't finished yet. Then right towards the end, about 2002-3, some more recording sessions were held with the intention of bringing some of these tracks to completion. This is probably where vocals like "Nature is a Language," "The Most Accomplished Surgeon," etc. came from.Everything wasn't put together and finished until Sleazy and Danny Hyde returned to the material in 2007.So TNB actually represents an almagamation of recordings made over a period of nearly 18 years, many different time periods and recording sessions that were never necessarily meant to go together. In this sense, TNB is even more impressive than it seemed at first to me, as a work of creative synthesis, a recovery and resuscitation of a pile of mismatched fragments and abandoned ideas and sketches."
Because God Told Me To Do It gave a great update a few months ago regarding this set. If you've any questions about it regarding tracklistings and such, please check his post or go directly to Important Records . Who knows, they may still have a set left. Haven't heard of it's status from them.
