Above image a stylisation of an Austin Spare piece.

For this set, the musts are the last three tracks in particular. A very moving yet meditative take on Sick Mirrors leading it's way toward a spectacular finish in Backwards. A very cleanly recorded set, yielding one of the finer versions of A Cold Cell.

Thanks as always to F for access and to Sleazy for permission to post.

Should any of this set be included in Colour Sound Oblivion, I shall pull it from the blog.

An aurally stunning performance, the recording quality doesn't do the work justice, though at this point, I'm simply grateful.
Ooo-wee this would be a potent addition to CSO if 'twere all cleaned up.
Thank you thank you F and Sleazy for the access to these fantastic archives and permission to share.
Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, this one will be on Colour Sound Oblivion and as per my M.O. if so, I will pull it from this blog.
Until then, though, it is my pleasure and priviledge to share this outstanding set, brief though it may be.

Listen and enjoy. This is not the cleaned up official release of Selvaggina, so I would urge you all to compare sound mastering with the official and note the difference that will be apparent between these Coil Live Archives and when Colour Sound Oblivion is released. (Please, god, let it be soon)

A fantastic set. I've been saving this one. It's a great inbetween from 2001 to the latter part of 2002, with excellent recording quality, sublime and moving Balance, as well as stellar sounds from Sleazy, Thighpaul, and Ossian, plus...
As with the other sets, should this one see release on Colour Sound Oblivion I'll pull it from this blog.
Thank you manyfold: F for access and Sleazy for permission.
Manic, unsettling, and beautiful beyond words. But then, I am biased:)

This version of Wraiths And Strays was on the original cdr pressing of Black Antlers , replaced on the rerelease with WAS from Mutek. I prefer Jhon's vocals here, to be perfectly honest.

A powerful set, to say the least. Certainly more impacting with video.

A huge thanks to F for the access to this one and to Sleazy for permission to post.

As usual, should this set be included in Colour Sound Oblivion, I will remove it from this blog.

A particularly reflective set.
I kick myself for not putting more effort into seeing these men live. Too few opportunities in the US. Nothing here now but the recordings. As always, a great deal of thanks and appreciation to F for making these available and to Sleazy for permission to post.
Though Important has announced the Ape Of Naples Box with Backwards, nothing further yet about Colour Sound Oblivion. As with the other live sets, should they or this set be part of CSO, they will be removed from this site.

That is all for now.

Black Paper excerpt

The Vortex Vault

Black Paper, being the first release(December 2006) of TVV, has Liles paired with Kenji Siratori .
The Vortex Vault is an ambitious undertaking by Liles, seeing a new release each month from Dec. 2006 through to November 2007. Though the sounds are culled from his archive of unreleased pieces , each submission of the Vault is new unto itself, with a wide variety of influences and collaborators. It is, though, the man himself who shines as a master artisan/craftsman.

Andrew Liles

Each of The Vortex Vault releases are limited to 300 and may be purchased either at the Liles Site or from Beta-lactam Ring Records.
I first encountered the musicks of Liles when I decided to go out on a limb and purchased The Dying Submariner/The Dead Submariner from Beta-lactam and I haven't looked back since. (earlier in this blog I had posted The Dead Submariner thinking it was OOP, but thankfully it is still in print(and hence removed) and available as the above-mentioned Double CD from BlR. Look for an excerpt from each soon)
This is, to date, the shortest (30 minutes total length) of The Vortex Vault pieces, but speaks very well to Liles ability through collaboration to draw the best out of those with whom he is paired.
As this is still in print, I am only including two tracks in the hopes of turning a few people on to his work and thereby helping to increase the numbers of enlisted fans.

More excerpts to come from The Vortex Vault.
Even if you don't care for these tracks, understand that each in this series are varied and different from one another. Check out BlR as excerpts are there as well. Hell, just check out Beta-lactam Ring for the heck of it. I promise that their label releases offer many and varied artists and their mail order catalogue expands to other labels and artists, too.
You have been informed:)

A very humble thank you to Timur for taking the time and having the good ear to sleuth out what is an honest mistake, but now becomes a question. (Look in the comments to see our discussion)

Apparently the set posted here as 24 October is the same performance listed as 25 October (currently posted at "Because God Told Me To Do It" (see link in sidebar)) from a different recorder. If our ears stand corrected, I will eat the pie again, but the questions, they come. Which date is this exactly? And whence t'other? Oh CSO, please be here when you can. And remember all content posted here that is on Colour Sound Oblivion will be removed from the site, although the sound qualities will be so vastly improved, ya won't care. Thank you.

On A Brief Hiatus

So, what began as a holiday of sorts has now turned into a brief hiatus due to the laptop being most ill (source of good wifi connects) and the musicks to which I have access being on the home desktop (prey to the evils of dial up:(

At any rate, this will be more sporadic than usual while I deal with warranties and borrowed connects (thank goodness for the flash drive:)

Hope all is well with everyone as we creep closer ever to Fall.

Zos Kia Coil Silence & Secrecy (Live Magenta Club 5 August 1983)

From Coil Live at Wiki :

"Experimental music group Coil's live incarnation has a distinct legacy of its own. The initial performances took place in 1983, however they stopped playing live for 16 years after a mere four performances. The first Coil release, a collaboration with Zos Kia titled Transparent, includes a track from the first Coil performance as well as the last 1983 performance. According to the liner notes of Transparent, during Coil's second performance, which was videotaped by Peter Christopherson, John Gosling pees on John Balance. Nick Cave, who was in the audience at the time, promptly left[1]. Marc Almond is also credited for performing that night while Christopherson is only credited for providing back up tapes during the event."

This, then, is the second night's performance. All thanks to Sleazy for permission and F for access.

Bruce Haack Alert

Heino und Jerry im Uber Space has posted The Electric Lucifer coupled with some fantastic images and some lovely YouTube clips featuring our Mr. Haack in the presence of one Fred (Mr.) Rogers. I knew I loved that program. (For those not in the U.S. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was a long-lived children's program on Public Broadcasting Service that featured some great things for kids and their parents.)

At any rate, check it/them out. Highly Recommended!

ELpH Live Volksbuehne, Berlin (14 December 1999)

From Coil at Answers :

"Coil's live incarnation has a distinct legacy of its own. The first live shows took place in 1983, but after only four performances, sixteen years would pass before they would play together again.[4]
On December 14 1999 Coil performed Elph.zwölf at Volksbuehne in Berlin. Although the performance lasted just under eighteen minutes, it marked the beginning of a new era of live performances. Coil would go on to perform close to fifty additional concerts, with varied set lists as well as performers."

Here, then, is that performance as ELpH in 1999, the first live edition of Coil since 1983.

Brief but powerful, this takes the same musical path their contribution to the Raster-Noton 20' to 2000 series travelled and was a precursor of many sounds in a live milieu to grace the oeuvre of Coil. A must for the completist ; a brief introduction to the abilities of Sleazy and Jhonn to take simple components of sound and weave them together into a magickal aural tapestry for the novice.

A huge thank you to F without whom I would never have been able to hear this, let alone share.

Oh what a difference a few weeks makes.
The above image is some manner of promo photo, culled from Discogs.

The below image is a sticker of foreshadow. Soon, very soon...(and culled from Brainwashed Gallery)
"An "authorized bootleg" of Coil's live performance in Porto, Portugal on June 21st, 2003 was released on CD in September via unknown sources..."
I believe that the referenced bootleg had track separation and related artwork. It is still available from some retailers, should you want the packaging.
It's possible, too, this will be part of CSO. If that happens, not only will the official release sound better, this post will be moot.

Andrew Liles Site
The Liles site lists an upcoming title of Somnambulance To Dream General.
Klanggallerie , as referenced in the comments (thanks again for keeping me honest:) and had I done proper sleuthing would have readily found, has this to say:
"Originally released in a microscopic edition on CD-R only, this masterpiece is presented to you now as a proper Cd with stunning artwork. Three bonus tracks have been added to the original album and what you get is Mr. Liles at his very best! Planned as a collection of obscure and leftover tracks, Somnambulants is an amazing testament of Andrew Liles' skills as a modern composer. A must-have from this member of Nurse With Wound, The wardrobe and The Vortex Vault."
Indeed. Had I known this would see the light of day in a new pressing, I STILL would have purchased the CDR. Fantastic sounds amid minimalist piano and more, Liles lists this title's rerelease as Winter 'o7, while Klanggallerie has early '08. Either way, definitely a piece worth seeking out.
Excerpted tracks are highlighted with an asterisk (*) on the above listing.
So, please give a listen, as this alchemist of sound wends his way through the everyday, finding and extracting the extraordinary. And be sure to keep an eye out for the release of Somnambulance... It'll be limited to 500 according to Klanggallerie.

In My Father's House Are Many Mansions...excerpts

For some, Andrew Liles will be a familiar name through his work with Nurse With Wound.
Here, I would like to introduce you to his further collaborations, not only with Stapleton and Colin Potter, but Aranos, Aaron Moore from Volcano The Bear, Jonathan Coleclough, Irr.App.(ext.) and more.
Due to the availability of this disc, I will not post the whole thing, however, I feel more people should hear the work of Liles, so an excerpt is here.
Full tracklisting (excerpted herein are marked with an asterisk):
Paul Bradley Journey Remix
*Colin Potter All Doors Open
*Aaron Moore Auto Manipulator - Trumpet Mix
*Jonathan Coleclough Aviophilia
Ruse The Ether Reel Rendered
Band of Pain Apathy in the UK (Blast# 3)
*Bass Communion Something to do with Hans Bellmer in a Pub at Last Orders using 15th Century Rural Magic
*Aranos Auto Manipulator - Gong Mix
Darren Tate Lite
*Irr. App (Ext)Ape Greasing Resonant Curvature Around Antiseptic Orifice
The Hafler Trio Song of the Ergophile
Unsong Te Whare Ao Aitu (Waits In Double Bed)
vidnaObmana 8 O'Clock
*Nurse With Wound Soliloquy for Lile(s)th
Freiband Reis
Please stop by the Andrew Liles site, as there are many titles available, mp3s and 4s, plus new titles in the works. I'll be excerpting parts of The Vortex Vault soon, so please check back.
If you like his collaborations, wait til you hear the solo work:)
I've pulled the link for The Dead Submariner, as it is still available from Beta-lactam Ring Records as part of the deluxe edition of The Dying Submariner. I shall likely replace it with an excerpt similar to this, with more infos. (By the by, BlR has a killer catalogue, including tons of stuff other than, but including, their releases.)

Review for "In My Father's House..." excerpt from Vital Weekly:
"At times the mixes remain close to the original gentle collages (like the mixes by Bradley or the very recognizable piano theme Potter uses) or more like soundscapes such as the tracks by Coleclough, Tate, Nurse With Wound (a Soliloquy no less) and Bass Communion. Ruse and The Hafler Trio deliver trademark, more abstract versions and Freiband submits, compared to the other tracks, the noisiest piece of them all. It is interesting to note that as much as these tracks are made by individual artists with individual styles, this CD still sounds as a coherent project, which makes for enjoyable listening and is probably why this is released under the name Andrew Liles. Another intriguing and highly enjoyable addition to the already impressive Liles-catalogue. (FK)"

Full concert from Essen, but as with other shows from the lads, it's hard to hear over the crowd.

Livin' Fear Of James Last Disc A

Review from Pitchfork
NWW @ Scaruffi

Now dig, y'all. This is a two disc set, only the first of which I am posting here. It's very much still in print and available on just about all continents, so I urge you to purchase this title. There are so many titles, I thought this might be a good opening for some to Nurse's earlier sounds.
Bon appetit!

Mything Pieces II

As with part 1, BLZ has this to say about the series:
" An internet-made compilation of the unreleased or upgraded tracks found on Strawberry's Mythology series."
From their television appearances in December 1963 on "It's The Beatles" and January 1964 back at the Palladium on a Sunday Night, a couple of tracks aired on BBC's "Top Gear" later in 64, to another appearance on "Blackpool Night Out" in August 1965, this collection continues their media legacy, with a final track from Lennon's appearance on "Frost On Sunday" when in the final seconds of the broadcast, the first public airing of the new track "Hey Jude" occurs to John's surprise, with his leading the audience in a sing-a-long of the chorus. Priceless!

Mything Pieces I

Further info here.
From BLZ:"An internet-made compilation of the unreleased or upgraded tracks found on Strawberry's Mythology series."

In which is covered roughly a year in the life, starting mid-1963 with recordings made for the BBC radio programme "Saturday Club", continuing through their TV performance from "Sunday Night At The Palladium", on to a command performance at London's Prince Of Wales Theatre, back to TV with the "Morecambe & Wise Show", some odds and ends, rounding it out in mid-1964 with television's "Blackpool Night Out". Talk about some busy human beings! At the "further info" link, you'll find dates and verifications. More Mything Pieces to come.
